India has a variety of habitats that hold varied birdlife. However, most of these habitats are under threat from something or the other. From these, the Grassland habitats in particular are the first to be encroached upon, on the pretext that these are wastelands. However, they are one of the most bio-diversity rich habitats that hold an amazing variety of birdlife. Rehekuri, Ozhar, Mayureshwar and Nannaj in Maharashtra.

Nannaj Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary : (established in 1979, also known as the Jawaharlal Nehru Bustard Sanctuary of Maharashtra) is a wildlife sanctuaryfor the Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) at SolapurMaharashtra. This is a vast grassland / scrub land. The sanctuary is approximately 25 kms from Solapur in a small village called Nannaj. The total area covered under sanctuary is approximately 600 hectares. However, it is a discontinuous area which is divided into various plots. The area is called “100 hectare” which is a core area of the sanctuary where the breeding pair has been observed. It is believed that there are less than 250 GIBs in the world and they are critically endangered. Recent census estimates only 4 Great Indian Bustards are left in the sanctuary.
